When you are living out in a rural area, typically your high speed internet options are fairly limited. You might think you are stuck with dial up connections, but today there are many more options that you can consider using so that you can have faster internet speeds.
The most popular type of high speed internet for those in rural areas is satellite internet. This has as high initial cost as you need to purchase the dish and get someone to professionally install it to get you a good signal. These tend to have a higher monthly fee and data limits that you have to be careful with. You need to look for service plans that don't charge additional money if you go over the limit. The best ones will just slow down your speed as opposed to charging you more.
Some go for long range wifi. These are very tall antennas that you get installed to your home. These will pick up a wifi signal long range and are fairly reliable. You won't get as fast speeds as with other things but there are normally no limits on your data usage.
If you have a smart phone, you might be able to tether it to your computer. If you have 3g access in the rural area you live in, this is something you could use for your internet access. Most cell phone plans will limit you to about 5 gigabytes of data, but this is great compared to a dial up connection. It's not as fast as DSL or cable, but it's better than nothing.
There are also broadband cellular connections. These have very low initial cost and the monthly fees are competitive with most broadband plans. Look for plans without caps or contracts as these are starting to come out and become more popular. If you can't find one like this, you will be dealing with 5 gigabyte caps just like when tethering a phone.
